| What happens on the day?
On the morning of RiverDragon, you will be brimming with confidence thanks to the expert tuition from the Brisbane River Dragons in the weeks leading up to the event.
Our 20 teams will meet at South Bank lagoon at 8.30am for the traditional ritual of ‘Awakening the Dragon.’ After an exciting display of Lion dancing and a serene Buddhist blessing of the fleet, monks will perform an eye-dotting ceremony to awaken the dragon and bring out its fire. This gives the boats and their crews the strength of the dragon.
With these formalities dealt with, teams will take turns in a challenging and visually spectacular series of race heats throughout the morning. In each of the competition heats, teams amass points depending on the number of wins and places they achieve. After lunch, teams will then compete in final knock-outs. The more points teams gain in the morning, the more opportunity they have to secure a coveted place in the grand final race.
By mid-afternoon, we will have selected our deserving winner, and distributed the honours and prizes earned throughout the day. From then on, it will be a matter of kicking back, relaxing, and planning next year’s assault on the competition.
